Encountering difficulties in Part Three of Devout Life

Group discussion began today on Part Three of the Introduction to the Devout Life. During the discussions, each of the groups found some difficulty with this section. In one way, the reading was easier because Francis de Sales makes use of a great variety of images taken from Nature and form human experience. On the other hand this section presents greater difficulties because our world view is very different from that of the people of Savoy at the start of the 17th Century. They saw God as actively present in all the events of their lives, bringing reward and punishment immediately; we tend to see God less in terms of Judge and more in terms of being Author of Life, perhas even detached from our exploits and our everyday wins and losses.

The discussions were very animated today, as can be seen in the reports from each of the groups.
