Introduction to the Devout Life
English Group 1

We were struck in our reading by the intimate concern shown by Francis de Sales to his reader, suggesting a knowledge of "her" soul. His personal concern was communicated by use of the simplest of terms and clear images, though these terms and images are rooted in scripture. We understand his promise that the Devout Life is not difficult with God's grace, but he cautions that it is a long process. Communicating this in a contemporary context would demand newer images, but the roots are the same. The gentleness is warm and invitational, though there hangs over these instructions and guidelines the shadow of hell. Perhaps this is nuanced by the piety of the times and, perhaps, we have to uncover what lies beneath this: a healthy respect for the importance of this work and the quest for salvation seems to suggest this.
